  1. Joe,

Do I have to replace the sheetrock already on my ceiling with cement board or can I just waterproof it and install the tile?

    Thanks,
    Randy

    1. Replace the sheetrock with cement board. It’s just not worth taking the chance Randy. When installing over sheetrock you are only adhering the tile to the paper. Over time that can fail from the wait of the tile and thin set. Great question…

  2. Hey Joe, I joined last night, and when I when to view the video ” installing cement board 1 & 2″ on my smart phone I still didn’t have any sound. I know there is sound because when video starts I can hear you talking but it is very lite and I can’t make out what you are saying. What is it that I’m doing wrong?

  3. Joe you talked about using TCC crete for shower floor, I found several grades online, which one do I use and where do I buy it, I live in Michigan? Thanks for your help, Bob

    1. You can buy sand mix from any Tile Store. If you can’t find it I will give you the ingredients to make your own. Lowes sells their brand in the tile department but it is expensive.

  4. A client wants to do a 24×24 porcelain tile, says it’s a rectified tile, wants small grout joint. Would you still reccommended doing a three sixteenth or a quarter joint with the grid? How can you tell that it’s rectified tile?

    1. I would use an 1/8 joint with rhat tile. The best way to explain it is they will have a squared edge with no bevel or just a micro bevel. Very nice to work with. I usually will use progress tile leveling system. Unless it’s a large area.

  5. Trying to leave message but page saying pending on Facebook can anybody help running a tile from kitchen through to hall no door strips to separate tile where is the best staring point and what about margins in hallway thanks??

  6. I’m doing our bathroom in mosaic marble tile , the room is 8’x12′ , I purchased the Mapel modified thin set . My question is , is this what you would recommend or is there something more suited for this project? It’s a pier and beam house with joist on 16″ centers with Hardibacker not sure all that makes any difference but I wanted to give any info just in case. Thanks Mike
P.S. My FB is pending so this is the reason for the email

  7. 12 x 24 tile in a shower, the box says a 50% offset is not recommended for large format tile. What is the correct offset for 12 x 24 tile?

    1. If you are using tile leveling spacers then you are good. (I recommend that you do) the reason they state this is because the tile can have a bow and cause lippage. So the recommend using a third. Leveling spacers solves this problem

  8. Ok is there a reason you would offset this 12×24 tile in a shower or can you lay them straight up.
Just thinking if I went up straight (no offset) all of the edges would be factory and the cut edges would be in the corners. Talk me off the ledge Joe

  9. Joe,

I am attempting to install 3×6 subway tiles for my tub walls. My house is really old and the walls and tub are not leveled. To be more specific, the tub slants towards the drain side about 2 inches over the length of the tub. When I install the subway tile leveled to the wall, the tile comes down to the tub on the far end of the wall, but is above the tub about 2 inches on the drain end just covering the bottom of the cement board. I ended up trimming a little bit of the tile at the far end of the tub so that I would have a gap to fill with caulk. Is a 2 inch gap too large to fill with caulk at the drain end? Do you have any recommendations of how I should handle this?

    Thanks,
    Alex

    1. You will need to cut tile to fit into that gap. That is really the only solution. I also would bring the tile down farther so the bottom row is all one piece. That is too bad that tub is like that. If the tile was bigger it wouldnt be as noticeable.

      1. Thanks for the quick reply.

I like your idea of bringing the bottom row of tile down. This would mean that I would have to pull the bottom row of tile off and start at the drain with a full tile and taper the bottom as I move towards the far end. I would probably install a 2 inch decorative tile strip above the bottom row so that I do not have to deal with moving the rest of the tile that I’ve installed down. What is the best method of pulling the bottom row of tile off and removing the dried thinset?

        Thanks again,
        Alex

  10. In one of your videos I remember seeing you use a spray on grout sealer, I simply cant find that video again. What was the name of that spray on sealer?
